What is a Story Outline

A story outline is the macro skeleton of a story, defining its core elements:

  • Theme: The central idea the story expresses
  • Structure: Three-act / Five-act / Hero's Journey and other classic structures
  • Plot Points: Key turning points and events
  • Character Arcs: Character growth and transformation

Creating a New Outline

  1. Go to the "Story" workspace
  2. Click "New Outline"
  3. Enter the outline name
  4. Choose an outline template (optional):
    • Blank Outline: Start from scratch
    • Hero's Journey: Based on Christopher Vogler's Hero's Journey theory
    • Three-Act Structure: Classic Hollywood structure
    • Four-Act Structure: Oriental narrative structure

Outline Editor

CharaStudio's outline editor uses a tree structure:

AI-Assisted Outline Generation

If you have a story idea but don't know how to expand it, try the AI outline generator:

  1. Click "AI Assist" in the top-right corner of the outline editor
  2. Enter your story summary (100-500 words)
  3. Select a structure template
  4. The AI will generate a complete outline draft
  5. You can drag to reorder scenes or edit/delete unsatisfactory scenes

Relationship Between Outlines and Chapters

  • One outline can contain multiple chapters
  • Chapters belong to outline plots
  • When generating a first draft, CharaStudio references the outline settings to direct the story's direction

Best Practice: Before starting formal writing, spend 10-20 minutes building an outline. This significantly improves writing efficiency and reduces the problem of discovering logical inconsistencies halfway through.
